With a few days until The U.S. and British Outdoor Championships, Atlanta Track Club moves into the final stages of preparation before hitting the big stage. Ahead of the Championships three elites traveled from New York to Vancouver then to Victoria for a final tune up before heading to Eugene. After racing New York Grand Prix on June 12, Yolanda Ngarambe, Daniel Nixon and Shane Streich traveled to Vancouver for the Sun Harry Jerome International Track Classic on June 14, 2022.
To kick off things in Canada, Nixon raced the 800m and finished 7th in his first international race. Nixon was one of two americans in the field. Next up was Ngarambe, in the women's 1500m. Ngarambe stayed in the front the entire race, until the last 120m to go and took over for the win in 4:07.60. Ngarambe stretched her lead out the last 50m and beat three olympians in route to her first 1500m victory of the season. In the the last event of the day for the elites, Streich ran 3:42.87 for 11th in the 1500m. This time was a seasons best and first 1500m race for streich this outdoor season.
On June 16, 2022 at the Victoria Track Classic on the track first again was Nixon in the men's 800m. Streich paced the men through 400m at 51 seconds and faded off the track at 500m. Nixon stayed on the pace early but finished 8th in 1:50. Next on the track was the women's 800m. Ngarambe used her momentus 1500m win and duplicated the race strategy at a shorter distance. Staying at the front and kicking hard the last 100m to separate herself from the pack, she came away with another victory in 2:02.86. Just .04 seconds off of her seasons best. Below, Ngarambe has shared some insight on her experience.
How did you prepare to race three times in six days?
“I did my best to stay active and moving throughout the travel days, but also tried to not overthink it in order to stay adaptable and relaxed. Getting my sleep and nutrition was a focus too!”
How did the first win help you mentally going into the second race?
“I was actually upset at first because I wanted to run the world standard (4:04.2). But once I processed that, it made me want to redeem myself in a way - and have a strong showing in the 800, which I view as an off event. I think I had a self-created chip on my shoulder going into that race”
How does this meet propel you forward for the rest of the season?
“It helped me move up in the world ranking for the 1500, which increases my chances to make upcoming world team. Running well back to back also boosted my confidence for the rest of the season, showing me that I am fit and ready to go!”
