In a busy weekend for Track and Field, Atlanta Track Club had 6 athletes competing on the west coast. Four Elite’s competed in the last leg of the Sound Running Sunset Tour in Los Angeles, CA., and two elite’s represented Sweden and Bahamas at the The World Championships in Eugene, Or.
Opening things up for the weekend was Gemma Finch in the first heat of the women’s 800m. From the gun Finch took control of the race taking the field through the first 400m in 59.4. Leading up until 700m, Finch finished 3rd in 2:04.24. Sadi Henderson got out strong in the second heat of the women's 800m and maintained a good position, covering the first 400m in 58.98 seconds. Henderson came in 8th place with a time of 2:01.60.
Next on the track was Olivia Baker stepping up in distance in the women's 1500m. She just just came off a win in the women’s 800m at the same meet last week. Baker stayed in the front pack and eventually closed in on the leader as the pacemaker stepped off. Baker finished second in 4:11.51, a season and personal best, after pushing hard in the final 200m. Allie Wilson, who owns the sunset tour's 800m meet record, competed in the second heat of the women's 1500m. Wilson conserved her energy for a late charge over the last 300m by starting comfortably and settling at the back of the pack. She finished 5th in 4:06.43, just under one second off of her personal best.
Yolanda Ngarambe got things started for the elites in Eugene in the women's 1500m. In the first heat, Ngarambe started conservatively at the back of the pack. At 900m she moved up nine places to second place going into 500m of the race and settling in the pack nicely. She finished in 8th with 4:09.15, missing the automatic qualifier to advance to the semi-finals by two spots.
On day two of the Championships, Samson Colebrooke competed in the opening heats of the men’s 100m. In heat five, the 2021 Bahamas 100m National Champion ran 10.23 for a 5th place finish, missing the automatic qualifier to advance to the semi-finals by two spots.
